Belgian Trappist pack available at Brussels Airport, Brussels South Charleroi Airport and the Brussels Eurostar terminal

100% Belgian, 100% Trappist

Travellers leaving Belgium via Brussels Airport, Brussels South Charleroi Airport or the high-speed rail terminal at Brussels-South can now take home an original souvenir. Under the banner “100% Belgian, 100% Trappist”, the five Belgian Trappist breweries are, for the first time, each bringing together one of their beers in a single package. The gift box contains five true classics: Chimay Bleue, Orval, Rochefort 8, Westmalle Tripel, and Trappist Westvleteren 12.

“For several years, the duty-free shops at the airports have offered a gift pack containing a selection of four Belgian Trappist beers. By adding a bottle of Trappist Westvleteren 12 to the pack, all Belgian Trappist breweries are now represented in this quintet, making the offer even more complete,” explains Philippe Van Assche, General Manager of the Trappist Brewery of Westmalle.

Cooperation and solidarity

“This gift box beautifully symbolises the cooperation and solidarity between the Belgian Trappist communities, as well as their shared identity and values,” adds Philippe Henroz, General Manager of the Orval brewery.

Alain Monteyne, General Manager of the Trappist brewery of Westvleteren, emphasises that “the brothers of Saint Sixtus Abbey are pleased to support this initiative. However, the total production in Westvleteren will not be increased”.

For the five participating Cistercian abbeys, the sale of Trappist beer is the main source of income — and for some communities even the only one. A beer may only bear the name “Trappist” if it is brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey, under the supervision of the monks.

A Trappist brewery differs from other breweries in that it does not seek to maximise production or profit. The income from beer sales is used to meet the needs of the monastic community, support solidarity within the Trappist Order, fund development projects, and contribute to charitable causes. www.trappist.com
