Bootle Community Pub Reopened Following Transformational Makeover

The Albion, located in Bootle, officially reopened on Friday 24th of July following a transformational investment of more than £389,911. The pub is part of Proper Pubs, the award-winning community wet-led operator division of Admiral Taverns, which operates more than 200 pubs across England, Scotland and Wales.

Inside, the pub has been completely transformed to include brand new flooring, fixtures and fittings throughout. The refurbished pub also includes one new dart board and two pool tables in the games area for customers to enjoy, along with an updated bar, games and snug area.

Outside, The Albion has brand-new festoon lighting, signage and an extended drinking area which is both open and covered. In addition, the refurbished beer garden can seat around 50 people.

It will offer a wide range of drinks promotions, including Wine Wednesday, where customers can get £2 off a bottle, Fizz Friday, offering customers a bottle of fizz for £10, along with cocktails, bottle and shot deals throughout the week.

Philip Maher, Operator of The Albion, said: "I loved seeing this incredible transformation come to life. Admiral’s expertise was incredibly helpful throughout the process, and they truly understood what this pub needed to provide for the community. From the outset, the aim was to create a welcoming, comfortable space where locals and visitors can come together.

“It was great to see people coming in to experience the finished pub for the first time. The transformation has given The Albion a fresh new look while retaining the character that makes it such an important part of the community.”

On top of the fantastic drinks selection, the operator hosts a busy schedule of entertainment for customers to enjoy including monthly karaoke on the last Friday of every month starting from 8.30pm, a weekly quiz on Thursday evenings starting from 8pm and weekly live music on a Saturday evening beginning from 9pm. Philip is also hoping to support all aspects of community life by collecting food to donate to the local foodbank. Going forward, he also hopes to support Claire House Children’s Hospice with organising charity events and raising money towards a defibrillator in the future.

Nikki Greenhalgh, Operations Director for Proper Pubs, said: “It is a real pleasure to have Philip at The Albion. It was great to see how well the refurbishment came together in the end and the positive response from customers following the reopening has been great so far.”

Bringing people together and creating vibrant community hubs is at the heart of what we do, and we are so glad to see another successful community pub opening.”

Proper Pubs is always looking for ways to support its communities through an annual schedule of events and fundraising initiatives. This year over Easter it collected 21,619 easter eggs to donated to local charities and in 2025 operators collected 20,500 selection boxes to donate to local charities and communities in need for Christmas, as well as raising £80,255 for Admiral Taverns’ charity partner, Claire House Hospice.

Furthermore, last year, Proper Pubs also successfully donated enough food to local foodbanks across the UK to feed 1,300 people for a week and has also been recognised in the UK-wide defibrillator installation campaign which has already saved 11 lives.

In 2026, Proper Pubs was listed as a finalist in the Best Community Pub category at the Great British Publican Awards, and was previously crowned Community Pub Operator at the Publican Awards in 2024.
