Czech Brew Star 2027 expands international focus with judging quality at the centre

Czech beer competition returns to Brno on 5 February 2027 with a stronger international focus and an emphasis on calibration, consistency and useful feedback for breweries.

BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC — Czech Brew Star will return to Mendel University in Brno on 5 February 2027, with the 2027 edition placing increased emphasis on international participation and the quality and consistency of judging.

The International Beer Tasting Competition judged 444 beers from six countries in 2026 with approximately 60 judges. For 2027, Czech Brew Star is preparing for a maximum of around 500 entries while continuing to broaden its international reach.

A central focus for the 2027 competition is the judging process itself. Priorities include internationally composed judging panels, experienced judges, calibration, consistency of assessment and feedback that provides participating breweries with useful information about their beers.

For Czech Brew Star, the value of a competition should extend beyond the awarding of medals. Recognition is important, but the judging process should also provide breweries with an informed external assessment of their beer, regardless of whether an entry ultimately receives an award.

The competition is registered with the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP).

Czech Brew Star is rooted in the Czech brewing environment and in a country closely associated with lager brewing, but the competition is open to breweries of different sizes and to a broad range of beer styles. Its Czech identity is intended to provide a distinctive foundation for an increasingly international event rather than define the limits of participation.

David Janda, organiser of Czech Brew Star, said:

“Czech beer culture gives us a strong foundation, but an international competition cannot rely on tradition alone. It has to earn trust through the quality of its judging, the experience of the people involved and the usefulness of the feedback breweries receive. We want Brno to be a place where different beer cultures can meet and learn from one another.”

The 2027 edition will continue to develop connections between breweries, judges, beer professionals and educators from different European beer cultures, with the judging environment remaining at the centre of that development.

The competition will again take place at Mendel University in Brno, combining its Czech brewing context with an academic setting and an international judging team.
