Devon’s Sandford Orchards Wins Listing in Sainsbury’s as Craft Apple Cider Sales Climb

Devon-based Sandford Orchards has just secured a listing for its award-winning Devon Red in Sainsbury's stores across the South West. Its much-loved Devon Red will be on the shelves in March making it available to an even wider cider audience.

Michael Troy, Sales Director at Sandford Orchards comments: “Apple Cider grew by 1 million litres in the retail sector in 2025 so there’s definitely a consumer appetite for standout ciders that great apples and exceptional cider making can produce! Supermarkets want to satisfy this growing appreciation for authentic ciders like ours. Devon Red is made from the whole juice of locally grown apples which are pressed and fermented by our highly experienced team of cider makers in Crediton, at the oldest working cider mill in the UK. These are the credentials that have won us a huge fan base amongst consumers and now they have also convinced Sainsbury’s that we would be a worthy addition to their supermarket shelves.”

Devon Red is a naturally tasty and utterly delicious, crisp and fruity cider. It takes its name from the rich red Devon soil that gives the orchards their distinctive quality. It is a refreshing, balanced apple cider packed with the juice of traditional English cider apple varieties, all grown and pressed in Devon. It is available from Sandford Orchards and other retailers, including Morrisons, Tescos, The Co-op, John Lewis & Partners and, from March, Sainsbury’s stores across the South West.

Michael continues: “At Sandford Orchards, we are all about sharing the joy of exceptional cider. We are delighted to have this opportunity to introduce Devon Red to new consumers and to make it easier for our loyal customers to add their favourite drink to their weekly shop.”

Editor's Notes

Sandford Orchards takes a low impact approach to producing cider:

Their orchards act as carbon sinks, promote soil health and support biodiversity.

Their apples are all grown in a 20 mile radius of the cider works.

Their by-products are bio-converted locally into natural green gas and CO2, which is used to carbonate their ciders.

They use locally coppiced regenerating woodlands for fuel for heating water and have installed solar panels which produce 25% of their required electricity.

They are working towards having all their company vehicles charged by renewable power.
