Grounds for Change: Shepherd Neame Launches New Coffee Recycling Scheme

ree

Independent family brewer and pub company Shepherd Neame has launched a new coffee grounds recycling scheme to reduce waste - and offer customers a boost for their gardens.

The Faversham-based brewer teamed up with fellow Kent independent family business John Street Beverage, based in Greenhithe, to launch its exclusive Creekside Coffee last year. The Arabica coffee blend uses Rainforest Alliance-certified beans, which are packed in recyclable bags when delivered to pubs.

Instead of disposing of the used coffee grounds as food waste, Shepherd Neame team members will now collect and repackage them in the empty bags, sealed and ready for customers to take home - free of charge.

Coffee grounds benefit gardens as they are a natural soil enhancer, offering a nitrogen-rich boost that can be sprinkled directly around plants, or mixed into compost to enrich its nutrient content.

The new recycling scheme is the latest initiative in Shepherd Neame’s People, Pubs and Planet sustainability strategy, which includes a commitment to ensure zero waste to landfill.

Shepherd Neame’s Director of Property Development and Sustainability Martin Godden said: “As a company we are committed to doing the right thing for our communities, our people and our environment. This simple initiative is a great way to give something back to our customers while also reducing waste and providing a positive impact on the environment.”
