It's Today! Guild Event - The Pub: Evolving not Dying?

Updated: Jun 28

Monday 12th May 2025, 7pmZoom online Pubs have survived pandemic lockdowns only to lurch into a crisis of rising costs and shrinking disposable income. Many fear this could be the beginning of the end for these social spaces that play a vital role in the health and wellbeing of our communities. Yet it could also be that this is only another moment in their history when pubs are having to adapt to survive, raising the question; how might pubs evolve in order to flourish and continue to meet the needs of communities and consumers? This special online event is co-hosted by the British Guild of Beer Writers and the Drinking Studies Network, an interdisciplinary and international research group that connects scholars working on drink and drinking culture across different societies and time periods. It will bring together some of the country’s leading academics to present their latest research and open a debate on the possible futures of the pub. Our speakers are: Professor Victoria Wells, University of York Dr Claire Markham, Nottingham Trent University Dr Thomas Thurnell-Read, Loughborough University Dr Robert Deakin, Loughborough University The session will be chaired by Guild Director Phil Mellows

Tickets: This event has finished.
