New series tells London’s remarkable story through pubs

Award-winning beer writer Will Hawkes has launched a new online series that focuses on fascinating London pubs, past and present. A Time and A Place, which is available free of charge via London Beer City, explores the story of individual London pubs, in the process illustrating and explaining the capital’s fascinating culture.

The first two editions are now available to read, focusing on Charlie Brown’s - a now-forgotten Limehouse dockers’ pub that was the East End’s most famous - and Earls Court’s Coleherne, at one time the world’s most legendary gay pub.

“The story of London is the story of pubs,” says Hawkes, twice winner of the Fortnum and Mason Drinks Writer of the Year award. “I think this is the perfect way of shining light on London today and in the past.”

A Time and a Place complements London Beer City, Hawkes’s monthly newsletter focusing on beer, pubs, and breweries in the capital, which has been running for almost four years. A yearly subscription costs just £10.50. “This is a fascinating moment in the story of London brewing and pubs, and it’s important to know what’s really going on,” Hawkes adds. “That’s what London Beer City is for.”
