Beer lovers and collectors of rare monastic brews now have the opportunity to experience a truly distinctive European beer tradition. Cardeña Quadrupel, a 10% ABV Spanish Trappist beer brewed by the monks of Monasterio San Pedro de Cardeña, has arrived in the UK and it is only available in one place: Beers of Europe in Norfolk.
Amanda Waterfield, Marketing Manager at Beers of Europe, said:
“This is a truly special beer and a very rare find in the UK. Authentic Trappist beers are already limited, but a Spanish Trappist Quadrupel is something you almost never see here. We’re proud that Beers of Europe is the only place in the country where people can discover it.”
Trappist beers are among the most respected and limited beers in the world, produced within monastery walls under the supervision of monks and following strict principles that prioritise authenticity, quality and charitable purpose over commercial scale. Cardeña Quadrupel fully embodies this tradition, offering a rare example of Trappist brewing outside the more familiar Belgian monasteries.
Located near Burgos in northern Spain, Monasterio San Pedro de Cardeña has stood for more than a thousand years and continues to follow the Cistercian order of the Strict Observance, commonly known as Trappists. Brewing within the monastery forms part of the community’s long-standing tradition of self-sufficiency, with proceeds supporting the monastery and charitable works.
Cardeña Quadrupel draws inspiration from classic Belgian monastic brewing but expresses the style through a Spanish lens. At 10% ABV, it is a rich, contemplative beer designed for slow appreciation.
Pouring a deep mahogany colour with garnet highlights, the beer reveals layered aromas of dried figs, raisins and plums supported by notes of caramelised sugar and toasted malt. The palate is full-bodied yet balanced, with gentle bitterness complementing the natural sweetness and delivering a smooth, warming finish.
Authentic Trappist beers are naturally limited in production, and Spanish examples are exceptionally rare. Beers of Europe is currently the only retailer in the UK where Cardeña Quadrupel is available, making it a highly sought-after addition for collectors, enthusiasts and anyone curious to explore monastic brewing beyond Belgium.
The beer pairs beautifully with mature cheeses, slow-cooked meats, dark chocolate desserts and dried fruits, and is best served slightly below room temperature in a wide-bowled glass to allow its complex aromas to develop.
Cardeña Quadrupel is available now from Beers of Europe, both online and in-store.
