Please email us if you want to come along.Brilliant beer, fantastic food and marvellous music, all with a touch of circus spectacular thrown in, can mean only one thing – The Midsummer Beer Happening in Stonehaven is ready to burst into life this weekend.

The three-day celebration is set to draw thousands of beer lovers from across the country to the festival’s purpose-built marquee at Baird Park to enjoy more than 120 different brews from the UK’s finest brewers and further afield, plus award-winning street food and the cream of the north-east’s musical talent. One of those brewers is De Circus Brouwerji from Belgian who will be arriving with staff dressed as Big Top performers.

Robert Lindsay, festival manager for the Midsummer Beer Happening, said: “De Circus Brouwerji joined us for the first time last year and they were an instant hit with the crowds.

“Not only did they pour some of their finest beers, in between they did a spot of juggling, some balancing tricks and even a bit of fire-breathing – outside the marquee of course. They were such a hit with the crowd, they are back by popular demand – and they didn’t hesitate to say ‘yes’ when asked because they enjoyed themselves so much.”

The festival will run from this Thursday, June 12, to Saturday, June 14, and finishing touches are now being made to the event site by the army of volunteers who make the Happening happen.

Robert said: “We are preparing for some 6,000 visitors to flock to the tent over the event and we want to once again create that friendly, warm and vibrant atmosphere that has become the hallmark of the Happening.“We have carefully curated the best beers and ciders we could find and invited brewers to come along so people can not only enjoy their product but also learn more about it. And we also have our own festival beer, specially brewed for the Happening by Six Degrees North. A gluten-free hazy pale, showcasing the unique Sorachi Ace hop, expect bold notes of key lime pie in a glass.

“Once again, we will have our al fresco street food court offering those festival favourites including burgers, pizzas, spicy treats and even some Spanish delicacies from Stonehaven’s Picos deli as well as award-winning fish and chips from The Bay On The Road.

“And it wouldn’t be the Happening if we didn’t have our celebrated music strand with everything from jazz to rock, funk to pop – all of which turns the festival into a party as the evening goes on.

“Just a wee reminder to everyone joining us this weekend that Saturday will see the return of our Hawaiian shirt day – so look out your most eye-catching kit!”

The Happening is unique among beer festivals in having its own cycling sportive held on the Saturday. Almost 1,000 cyclists will ride out to take on four different and challenging routes around the rolling Mearns countryside.

Robert said: “This has become one of the most popular events in the north-east’s cycling calendar where riders can go through their paces then be rewarded with a cold pint or two at the end.”

The not-for-profit Happening, run entirely by volunteers, will once again be raising funds for local charities. Since it began as the Stonehaven Real Ale Festival 16 years ago, the event has raised £375,000 for good causes.

This year, almost 20 charities will benefit, including Stonehaven Sea Cadets, Stonehaven Fireballs Ceremony and Friends of Kincardine Community Hospital.

Robert said: “We want everyone to have a fantastic time at the Happening, while also helping to create a lasting legacy for Stonehaven through the charities we help. Everyone of these causes works so hard to improve so many lives and to better our community. This is a way to say thank you.

“We can only do that with the support of everyone who comes to the Happening, whether as a visitor to enjoy the fantastic atmosphere or as a volunteer working tirelessly to make it happen. They are the soul and the lifeblood of the Happening and we cannot thank them enough.

“So, we have the beers, we have the food, we have the music… all we need now is the people to come along and make memories that will last forever. See you in the tent.”
