Cape Town based beer writer Lucy Corne is penning a new edition of Beer Safari, Africa's craft beer travel guide, and has launched a crowdfunder campaign to assist with some of the travel costs.
For ZAR 650 (GBP 30), supporters can see their name in the 280-page book and receive a signed copy (free shipping only for South African addresses). Other options range from ZAR 50 (GBP 2.30) for a pint, to corporate sponsorships of varying amounts.
The book is a second edition of Corne's 2015 homage to South African breweries, which featured more than 100 breweries across eight of South Africa's nine provinces. The long-awaited update will of course feature all of South Africa's craft breweries, but will also venture into Africa, documenting the continent's small but exciting beer scene.
Beer Safari: A guide to the breweries of Africa will be published by Penguin Random House in 2027.
Some research is already complete, including trips to Namibia, Botswana, Rwanda, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania. Other countries' breweries currently sit on a wish list due to the extensive costs in travelling around Africa – not covered by the publisher. These include Angola, Nigeria, Burundi and Senegal. Breweries that cannot be visited in person will still be included, but interviews will be conducted by video call and beers will have to be shipped to South Africa for tasting.
Crowdfunder pledges help towards fuel, flights and accommodation and photography.
