Independent City of London pub honours Catherine Eddowes, Jack the Ripper’s fourth victim.

London, 29 October 2026 — The Catherine Eddowes has opened at 29–31 Mitre Street in the City of London. The pub welcomed its first guests with a soft launch on Tuesday 27 October, following a refurbishment and a refreshed drinks offer from independent, family-owned operator The Craft Beer Company.

The name honours Catherine “Kate” Eddowes, who was murdered outside the pub in Mitre Square on 30 September 1888 by the killer known as Jack the Ripper.

The name reflects the conviction that the women he murdered deserve to be remembered as people, not as footnotes to their killer’s story. The pub’s tribute puts it plainly: “His name became infamous. Hers deserves to be remembered.”

In the pub’s new drinks menu, founders and owners Martin Hayes and Peter Slezak explain:

“By placing her name above the door we hope to give her a lasting place in the everyday life of the City. Our ambition is to make the pub that bears her name one of the City’s finest with outstanding drinks and a warm, personal welcome that makes you want to return.”

With its beautiful wood interiors and soft lighting, The Catherine Eddowes captures the warmth and character of a proper Victorian pub. It is a quintessential City tavern: comfortable, welcoming and made for settling in over a drink in good company.

The drinks list includes a vast wine and Champagne range, more than 300 spirits, including 100+ malt whiskies and 50+ rare bourbons, plus cocktails and 27 beers on draught, including nine real ales. Remarkably, pints are priced from £3.50 and bottles of wine from £19.50 — probably the lowest prices in the entire City of London.

The Catherine Eddowes remains under the independent ownership of Hayes and Slezak, with “The Craft Beer Co presents” above the door. The two old school friends founded The Craft Beer Co in 2011. Their aim for the relaunched pub is a welcoming City local for clients, colleagues and friends.
