ree

Tūn Brewing Co., a new microbrewery founded by psychiatrist-turned-brewer Richard Alston, has made an immediate impact on the global brewing stage, scooping a series of prestigious medals at the World Beer Awards in Norwich this month.

This is the first time the brewery has entered the competition, and their debut was marked with success across both taste and design categories:

Taste Awards:

  • Gem State of Mind – Bronze (England, IPA: Milkshake IPA/New England IPA)

Design Awards:

  • Archetype – Silver (Can Design), Silver (Can Label Design), Bronze (New Launch)

  • Gem State of Mind – Silver (Can Design), Silver (Can Label Design), Bronze (New Launch)

  • Lemondrop – Silver (Can Design), Silver (Can Label Design), Bronze (New Launch)

  • Tūn Brewing range – Silver (Can Range)

Discussing the award wins, Richard Alston, Founder of Tūn Brewing Co. commented:

"We are absolutely thrilled to receive this award. To be recognised on an international stage so soon after our launch is an incredible honour. This is a real boost for us as we continue to share our beers with more people across the UK."

The recognition reflects not only the quality of Tūn Brewing Co.’s beers but also the creativity of their striking can designs, which were brought to life by Tiger Systems’ design duo Kris Hunt and Georgina Cheshire.

A New Brewery with a Different Perspective

Founded in Chorlton, Manchester, in 2024, Tūn Brewing Co. is built on the idea of “drinking with purpose.” Alston, a psychiatrist by training, brings a unique perspective to the beer industry. Having spent years observing Britain’s complex drinking culture, he believes now is a pivotal moment to reshape our relationship with alcohol.

Beer should be something that brings people together — to connect, to celebrate, to savour — not just a means to excess,” Alston explains. His vision for Tūn Brewing is to foster healthier, more mindful drinking habits, while still championing the creativity and community that define the craft beer scene.

All Tūn Brewing Co.’s beers are vegan and gluten-free, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for as many drinkers as possible. Beer lovers can try the award-winning range for themselves by visiting the brewery’s online shop at tunbrewing.com.

About Tūn Brewing Co.:

The name "Tūn" reflects two key inspirations. Tūn is an Old English word for settlement or community, a nod to the connections beer can foster. This word lives on in the suffix "-ton," found in the names of many British places, including the founder’s home in Chorlton, Manchester. Secondly, "Tun" is the name given to the brewing vessels, such as a mash tun or lauter tun, that are essential in the creation of beer. Together, these meanings represent Tūn’s vision: to create beers that bring people together while honouring the craft of brewing.

Brewing has been part of Richard Alston’s life since his teenage years. What began as a hobby later became a form of creative expression and fulfilment during a period of personal mental health challenges. Today, that passion has grown into Tūn Brewing Co., a microbrewery that is as much about community and creativity as it is about great beer.
