What is Tūn? Everything you should know about Chorlton’s Newest Craft Brewery

Launched a year ago, Tūn Brewery has a clear purpose: to create beers that bring people together, honour the craft of brewing, and help shape a healthier drinking culture.

A name with 2 meanings

But where does the brewery name come from? Founder Richard Alston says that the name "Tūn" reflects two key inspirations: Tūn is an Old English word for settlement or community, a nod to the connections beer can foster. This word lives on in the suffix "-ton," found in the names of many British places, including our home in Chorlton, Manchester.

Secondly, "Tun" is the name given to the brewing vessels, such as a mash tun or lauter tun, that are essential in the creation of beer.

Together, these meanings represent Tūn’s vision: to create beers that bring people together while honouring the craft of brewing.

Made in Chorlton?

All of the recipes are developed and the beers created on Richard’s pilot kit in his home in Chorlton. The beers are then (for the moment) commercially brewed in Lancashire, as it’s currently the best way to ensure the highest quality for the beers, before Richard is able to open Tūn’s own premises in Chorlton.

About the future of the brewery, Richard says:

“We’ve honestly been overwhelmed by the warmth of the reception we’ve had in Chorlton and across Manchester as a whole. From day one, people have backed what we’re trying to build, and that means everything to us.We truly see Chorlton as our home, and in the future, we’d love to open premises there — whether that’s a taproom, a shop, a brewery, or, ideally, a combination of all three. My vision is to create a space where people can drink with purpose: enjoying great beer with friends, watching live entertainment, learning more about beer through tastings and brewery tours, or sitting down to a genuinely tasty meal. We’d also love to bring local businesses into the space — collaborating with independent food traders, artists and producers so it genuinely reflects the community around us.It may not happen in the short term, but we’d also love to trial a food and drink festival that brings that vision to life — a celebration of great beer, great food and the community that’s supported us from the start. “

If you’d like to try Tūn’s award-winning beers, come and meet the team at Altrincham Market (Greenwood St, Altrincham, WA14 1SA) on the following Saturdays: 28th February, 14th March, 4th April, and 18th April.

Notes to Editors

About Tūn Brewing Co.:

Brewing has been part of Richard Alston’s life since his teenage years. What began as a hobby later became a form of creative expression and fulfilment during a period of personal mental health challenges. Today, that passion has grown into Tūn Brewing Co., a microbrewery that is as much about community and creativity as it is about great beer.

Our Ethos: Drinking with purpose — to connect, to celebrate, and to savour — can foster healthier habits and deeper enjoyment, moving beyond the culture of drinking to excess. We want our beer to be accessible to as many people as possible, which is why our range is both vegan-friendly and gluten-free.
