Good day. My name is Obakeng Malope, and I am a filmmaker and beer brewer from South Africa. I am writing to request your support in writing an article about my latest film, Mamogaswa, which will be screened at Moonwake Brewery in Edinburgh, Scotland, in partnership with Women in Beer®, an organisation that champions diversity and inclusion in the craft beer industry.
You can view the film here: Mamogaswa – https://youtu.be/aZZuRbCv23I?si=D2_VoAk8-cyt_vzY
About the Film: Mamogaswa
Mamogaswa is a deeply personal documentary that blends two rich traditions from my Tswana heritage: the art of storytelling and traditional beer brewing. I belong to the Tswana tribe, the majority population in Jericho and the North West Province of South Africa regions shaped by the legacy of apartheid-era segregation.
Growing up, 7 p.m. was a sacred time when we would gather around the fire and listen to folktales passed down by our grandmothers. These stories, often about animals, taught us moral lessons and cultural values. One legend that has endured through generations is that of Mamogaswa—a mythical creature believed to be part-human, part-snake, or mermaid-like, who lives in rivers and dams. She is said to appear in the form of a tornado when angered, uprooting rooftops and causing havoc.
Our grandmothers were also traditional beer brewers, making Bojalwa ba Setswana using open fires not stoves. Brewing was a communal activity, one that we children watched. Sadly, as the elders pass on, these practices and stories are fading.
Mamogaswa captures these cultural traditions while exploring the intersection of folklore, heritage, and modern craft beer. The documentary showcases both traditional and craft beer brewing in South Africa, weaving it together with the myth of Mamogaswa and the disappearing art of oral storytelling.
Partnership with Women in Beer
I have partnered with Women in Beer, a British-based community that supports women in the beer industry—whether as professionals, enthusiasts, or hobbyists. The founder, Amelie Tassin, is leading the initiative to screen Mamogaswa at Moonwake Brewery in Edinburgh on 18 September 2025.
Women in Beer® advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the Beer Industry.
Women in Beer® is a community. They meet up in local pubs, attend events and festivals, visit breweries, and learn from other women in the brewing industry. They are here to support women in their beer journey, whether it’s their passion, their career, or they are just looking for a new hobby.
Their activities are:

About Beer Is Art
In addition to being a filmmaker and brewer, I am the founder of Beer is Art, a South African initiative that empowers unemployed youth (21+) by teaching them beer brewing, licensing, podcasting, and beer brand creation. The other vision is to partner with breweries to have spaces where beer films and documentaries can be screened, building a platform to promote the beer industry through cinematic storytelling.
There is currently no formal space for beer-related documentaries to be viewed and celebrated. By collaborating with breweries, Beer is Art aims to bridge that gap and ensure that beer stories just like beer itself have a home.
If you are able to write an article and publish it or help promote this cultural and industry-spanning event, I would be truly grateful.
