Women’s Beer Group Aims to Reach £10,000 Mark in Fundraising

ree

The Glasladies Beer Society, a group for women and non-binary beer enthusiasts is aiming to reach the £10,000 fundraising mark at their upcoming beer festival on 1 November at the Queen Margaret Union, Glasgow.

Since its foundation in 2019, the group has raised over £8500 for various local and national charities including The Beatson Cancer Charity, Drumchapel Foodbank, Glasgow Women’s Aid, Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) and many more. The most recent fundraiser was a collaboration with six local breweries to mark Glasgow’s 850th anniversary. The group were pleased to raise £1042 for Refuweegee, a charity that provides a warm welcome to forcibly displaced people, treating everyone with kindness and dignity, addressing all kinds of poverty; food, dignity, transport, digital, hope and opportunity.

Nix Prabhu, the group’s founder said: “We are lucky to have so many talented breweries in Glasgow coming together on a project that was perfectly aligned with our group’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and innovation in the beer community. We chose Refuweegee in keeping with our underlying principle of being a safe space for those who may otherwise feel excluded, and to drive home the point that “People Make Glasgow” and everyone is welcome here. We are particularly pleased to be making this donation to a charity that supports refugees given the recent increase in hateful rhetoric around refugees and asylum seekers.”

The group now turns its sights on a new goal: breaking the £10,000 mark of overall funds raised and they hope to do so at their upcoming “Beer is for Everyone” festival. Taking place on 1 November, the festival boasts an amazing line-up of breweries and drinks vendors from across Scotland and even as far as Worthing, England, and the Isle of Man. A portion from ticket sales and 100% of raffle sales will go to this year’s chosen charities, Shelter Scotland and Glasgow Women’s Library.

The festival also includes a prize for “Beer of the Festival” and the ever popular “Dog of the Festival” in addition to two workshops that include free beer tastings.

Prabhu adds, “Fundraising is at the heart of the group’s activities and the festival is the perfect example of how one can have fun while making a positive impact on our community and the world around us.”
