Responding to the announcement of details on Extended Producer Responsibility proposals and England, Wales and NI’s Deposit Return Scheme for drinks containers Emma McClarkin Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association said:
“Our industry is already heavily regulated and this announcement furthering divergence among the four nations will add further costs and complication, many of our members operate across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and will have to tailor their approach to each. We’re pleased the Government has addressed some of the concerns raised in the consultation and the changes on glass will be welcomed by pubs, but these regulatory changes will still add a huge cost to our already struggling sector as it seeks to recover from the pandemic.
“As an industry we are committed to reducing our environmental impact with many in the beer and pub sector already having made huge strides in improving environmental and sustainability performance, alongside a recently published Net Zero Carbon Roadmap setting ambitious targets to achieve Net Zero, well ahead of Government targets. We will be working closely with our members to understand their concerns around the details of this system and will be encouraging Governments in all devolved nations to come together and create a system that is simultaneously sustainable and sensible. ”
