Guild members Boak & Bailey have been shortlisted for the drinks book award at the prestigious Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards 2018 for 20th Century Pub.
As previous winners of the F & M online drinks writers award, they’re delighted to be nominated again. The winners will be announced on 10 May
20th Century Pub is the second book from Boak & Bailey, whose first title Brew Britannia was much praised and has recently been reissued. This book is a culmination of more than a decade looking at and thinking about pubs of all kinds. It tells the story of the pub and its role in British life during the 20th century from every angle, by means of evocative oral history, interviews and historic documents.
Meticulously researched, engagingly written and highly informative, this is the definitive book about the social history and culture of a particularly English institution.
A black-and-white plate section illustrates how our beloved pub has changed over the last 100 years.
As the huge revival of interest in beer continues, 20th Century Pub delves into the various guises of the English pub throughout the 20th Century: from early working pubs, 1930s moderne and mock- Tudor roadside taverns to 1980s theme pubs, community pubs and micropubs.
The pair’s inimitable and entertaining writing style – responsible for making their beer blog so popular – engages the reader immediately. With the very existence of the pub considered under threat, this cornerstone of British life is examined and celebrated by these two award-winning drinks writers – who met in a pub.
