Henley-based pub operator and brewer Brakspear has been named as the Best Tenanted & Leased Pub Company in the country. The company scooped the top accolade at the Publican Awards 2014, announced yesterday in London.
Pub companies from across the country enter the Publican Awards, which are seen as the ‘ones to win’, thanks to the stringent judging process that ensures the top rewards go to the best entrants. Three companies were shortlisted for the Best Tenanted & Leased Pub Company category, with Brakspear seeing off competition from Wiltshire-based Wadworths and Liberation from the Channel Islands.
Collecting the award, Brakspear chief executive Tom Davies said, “This is a great result for Brakspear and we’re extremely proud to be named as the best tenanted pub company, ahead of a very strong field of talented competitors.
“We’re particularly pleased to win this award as it’s not based solely on how we presented ourselves to judges. They visited several Brakspear pubs in and around Henley, conducted mystery visits across the estate and spoke confidentially to a number of our licensees. This is genuinely an award for pub operators who treat their tenants well.”
In giving the top award to Brakspear, judges pointed to the company’s wide-ranging support for its tenants, including: customised interior design service; bespoke marketing support and training courses for licensees and their staff. They said, “Brakspear has worked imaginatively on the landlord-tenant relationship, offering more flexibility. This is reflected in the strong results from tenant surveys.”
The Publican Awards 2014 were presented at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, by comedian John Bishop. They are organised by industry magazine The Publican’s Morning Advertiser. Judges for the Best Tenanted Pub Company included City analysts, journalists, pub guide editors, top industry consultants and industry body chiefs.
