Britain’s pub capitals – Who takes the Top spot?

We’re a nation of pub lovers, and due to being in lockdown, we haven’t been able to go out and do what Brits love best – go to the pub for a warming Sunday lunch, a quick after-work drink (or three), or a boozy night out with friends.

Liberty Games has analysed the addresses of over 51,679 British pubs and geographical data for over 350 boroughs, to see which part of Britain have the ‘highest pub density’. You can view our findings in full here.

Pubs have been a part of British life for around 2,000 years, brought to our shores by invading Romans, so it’s no surprise that our love of pubs runs deep. But which city across the UK has been crowned as Britain’s Pub Capital?

Taking the top spot is Liverpool with a total of 477 pubs scattered across the city, which equates to a whopping 11 pubs per square mile! Liverpool is the UK’s hotspot for pub crawls and the perfect destination for your post-lockdown pub crawl.

Following closely behind is Brighton and Hove with 340 pubs in total, and 11 pubs per square mile, making this city a real competitor for Liverpool in the quest for Britain’s Pub Capital.

Third place goes to Portsmouth with 163 pubs in total and 10 per square mile, followed closely by Norwich with 155 in total and 10 per square mile.

How do other cities around the UK compare? Take a look at the table below that reveals the top 10 cities for a post lockdown pub crawl:

Looking at the real home of ale houses, London has had its own analysis of the 33 most pub populated boroughs. But which boroughs of London are leading the way in pubs per square mile?

Right at the heart of the city, it’s the City of London borough that takes the crown with a staggering 238 pubs in total. That works out as 213 pubs per 1 square mile, absolutely crawling with breweries and edgy craft beer pubs.

Westminster is the second pub capital in London with a total of 368 pubs, 44 per square mile. The third most pub-loved borough is Camden with 259 pubs in total equating to 31 per square mile.

About Liberty Games:

Liberty Games are the UK’s largest games room retailer, selling amusement equipment such as arcade machines, pool tables, pinball machines and much more.

Methodology:

To work out the number of pubs per square mile in each location we used Get The Data’s list of pubs (derived from the Food Standard Agency’s Food Hygiene Ratings and the ONS Postcode Directory) and area data for council districts. Each pub featured in the list was assigned to a district based on their registered address. The number of pubs for each district was then divided by the total area to work out the number of pubs, on average, per square mile. Please find our full dataset here.
