Butcombe wins Gold at World Beer Awards

Butcombe Brewing Co.’s Original Bitter has won a Gold Award in the UK Bitter 4% – 5% category at World Beer Awards.

Having launched Butcombe Original Bitter in Bristol back in 1978, the beer has gone from strength to strength. For 26 years, it was the only beer Butcombe brewed and remains its most popular beer.

Since that time, Butcombe has become Bristol’s oldest and largest brewery. But the brewery has ensured Original retains its pioneering quality and classic taste. Butcombe’s knowledge, single minded vision and dedication to brewing over the last four decades has led to this award.

Butcombe claimed their Gold at a ceremony hosted at the Hilton London Olympia on 10th August. The awards are chosen by a renowned industry panel of international experts chaired by Adrian Tierney Jones, the acclaimed beer and food writer.

Butcombe scooped the award by delivering a beer which offers a grainy, bittersweet nose and even more pronounced tropical fruit and citrus notes, with a slightly greater ABV. The palate from the beer is bittersweet, biscuity, full, citrusy leading to a dry bittersweet finish. These were all the qualities that the judges sought.

Butcombe’s Rare Breed Bitter also secured a Bronze in the same category at the World Beer Awards.

To aid the success of their beers, Butcombe investing in the business across the board; launching a rebrand, improving the infrastructure of its brewery, and hiring specialist brewers to ensure the technical excellence of the beer.

Geraint Williams, Managing Director of Butcombe Brewing Co. said: “Taking a Gold Award back to Bristol is a fantastic reward for the hard work we’ve put into our brewery over the last 40 years. It’s great to see the one of the West Country’s favourite beers achieving success on the world stage. As part of our classic range, Butcombe Original has the local heritage which really makes it special. It has been around for a long time and will be remain a staple our widening and innovative range, as we plan to launch an additional five new beers this year to cater for ever changing consumer tastes.”

Butcombe Original

The beer that changed everything. The first brew we perfected, the beer that made our name with its distinctive bitter, clean and refreshingly dry flavour. Made with only the best Maris Otter malt blended with a variety of English hops (a secret that we can never share), Butcombe Original is the classic session beer.

Butcombe Rare breed

Rare Breed is the result of Adam Henson’s dedication to sustainable farming and a passion for characterful, artisanal beer. Using the finest Maris Otter malting barley and aromatic Fuggles hops, delicious, fruity Cascade and Amarillo hops and, of course, purest Mendip Spring Water, Rare Breed is a distinctive, clean tasting pale ale with a smooth, citrus twist. A bold, standout beer that’s one of a kind.
