DesignMyNight estimates King’s Coronation will drive 480,000 bookings across May Bank Holiday for hospitality venues listed on the platform

As His Majesty King Charles III Coronation celebrations are fast approaching, leading hospitality discovery and booking platform DesignMyNight, is expecting there to be a boost in bookings, having received more than 450,000 reservations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend in 2022.

Last year the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee was celebrated with events and street parties taking place all over the UK, supported by extended licensing hours. This momentous occasion provided a positive boost to the hospitality sector with DesignMyNight receiving 458,328 bookings through Access Collins, a 672% increase compared to the same pre-pandemic dates in 2019. As the King’s Coronation on 6th May gets closer, hospitality venues and event organisers need to begin communicating and marketing their plans to drive consideration and advance bookings.

Offering her advice for the upcoming royal celebrations, Leighanne Bent, Senior Marketing Manager at DesignMyNight said “We witnessed great excitement for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and it highlighted that the hospitality industry is key in helping the nation celebrate these historical royal events. Although many DesignMyNight users love a trip to pubs and bars – especially when there’s an extra bank holiday involved – they are hungry for something that stands out from the crowd. From limited edition pizzas and corgi parties to bottomless brunches with a Brit-themed beer selection, there are so many inventive ways to increase footfall for what’s expected to be one of the biggest weekends of the year for trade. And with a two-hour extension to licensing hours in England and Wales over the Coronation weekend, hospitality operators have a great opportunity to do something creative that makes their venue THE place to be.”

The Rubens at the Palace, which overlooks the Royal Mews of Buckingham Palace, is a fantastic example of a venue that reached full capacity over the Jubilee weekend. “We launched our Platinum Jubilee Royal Afternoon Tea in the week leading up to Her Majesty’s Jubilee and ran this throughout the summer until the end of August,” said Vince Castronovo, General Manager of The Rubens Hotel. “It was a privilege not only to make record-breaking covers for the event but to also be part of something truly historic and special.”

Vince’s enthusiasm was shared by Suzie Thompson, Vice President of Commercial at Red Carnation Hotels which own The Rubens at the Palace. “The Queen’s Jubilee gave us the opportunity to create exciting new menus and host special themed events that put a spotlight on everything The Rubens at the Palace has to offer” she said. “This was an excellent opportunity for our hotel to maximise revenue, surprise and delight our guests, and celebrate this unique moment in history with our teams”.

According to an ICM poll, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations over the bank holiday weekend last June saw 16.7 million people take part in the festivities – that equates to one in four of the UK population – and provided an important boost for the hospitality sector, which saw a 41.4% spend increase between June 2nd and 5th, according to Barclaycard.

People are expected to travel from all over the world to enjoy the atmosphere of the Coronation, with consultancy firm, Brand Finance, predicting that the King’s Coronation should provide a £1bn boost to the UK economy via spending in pubs, hotels and shops.

“If hospitality is to capture its share of increased spending over the Coronation weekend, advance tickets will be an important tool for hospitality operators” added Leighanne Bent “Over 6,600 tickets for Platinum Jubilee events were sold through Access Tonic on DesignMyNight with a value of £120,000 so planning, listing and taking advance bookings will help maximise the profit potential of the Coronation as people look for creative ways of celebrating, despite fear over the cost of living crisis. Updated search engine functionality on DesignMyNight makes it the first search engine on the market to accommodate queries across the hospitality sector for every kind of venue. This enables revellers to search and book for bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs in real time and the greater visibility is expected to help drive additional reservations and ticket sales for Coronation events through a simplified booking process.”
