1822 was a pivotal year in the history of Burton upon Trent, the starting point for decades of growth that would turn this sleepy Midlands town into the Brewing Capital of the World. The event that started the transformation happened late in the year when Samuel Allsopp produced the first commercial Burton brewed India Pale Ale; this was sent to India in December of that year and started a battle between London Brewer George Hodgson and not only Allsopp but also other Burton brewers: Bass, Worthington and Salt for dominance in the Indian market.
