Venue: The Constitutional Club

150 High Street, Burton Upon Trent, Staffordshire, DE14 1JE

Date/Time: Friday 11th November 2022 1pm-6pm

1822 was a pivotal year in the history of Burton upon Trent, the starting point for decades of growth that would turn this sleepy Midlands town into the Brewing Capital of the World. The event that started the transformation happened late in the year when Samuel Allsopp produced the first commercial Burton brewed India Pale Ale; this was sent to India in December of that year and started a battle between London Brewer George Hodgson and not only Allsopp but also other Burton brewers: Bass, Worthington and Salt for dominance in the Indian market.

Guild members and non-members are welcome to attend a series of talks and a social gathering to help mark this special anniversary. The event begins at 1pm, at The Constitutional Club, with talks lasting throughout the day. There will also be a commemorative plaque unveiling by Mr Jamie Allsopp, the Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandson of Samuel. After the lectures, attendees are then welcome to continue the festivities at The Coopers Tavern, 43 Cross St, Burton-on-Trent DE14 1EG where a special version of Allsopp’s IPA will be pouring.

2.00pm             Jamie Allsopp, seven-times-great-grandson of Samuel Allsopp, tells the story of the rise, fall and rebirth of Allsopp’s and the original Burton IPA, with an exclusive tutored tasting of a special commemorative IPA led by Allsopp’s brewer Jim Appelbee.

3.50pm             Beer writer and You-Tuber Johnny Garrett presents a new ‘Modern British IPA’ co-created with London’s Meantime Brewing, and discusses how the future of the world’s most popular craft beer style could involve bringing it back closer to its British roots – which took hold in London before flourishing in Burton.

4.20pm             Round-up and general discussion.

5.00pm             Further beer tasting and close.

This event will be followed by more beer being poured at the Cooper’s Tavern, Burton-Upon-Trent, for those who wish to carry on.
