This spring, the team from Our Farm by Simon Rogan working alongside the multi-award-winning brewers from Fell Brewery, Flookburgh, have crafted the second beer in their collaborative series of four limited edition brews.
Using surplus produce grown on the farm near the Lake District village of Cartmel, the two teams have crafted a Courgette & Mint Gose for Spring.
Gose beers are unique in their style, with an unconventional salty and sour flavour profile. Gose beers have a different flavour profile and a low ABV, meaning that they are more versatile when adding unusual ingredients like courgette or fresh herbs. Fell Brewery & Our Farm’s limited-edition Courgette & Mint Gose is no exception at 3% ABV, resulting in a refreshing palate cleanser, which makes use of a simple malt base to support juiced courgettes, as well as fermented courgette juice, spritzed up with salt and a restrained amount of pineapple mint. The beer has a light finish, with a lingering freshness.
The brew is now ready to be poured at the first ever edition of ‘Local Heroes’, Tuesday 16th April to Saturday 20th April, a week-long celebration of local artisans at Simon Rogan’s one Michelin-starred Rogan & Co, Cartmel.
During the week guests will be able to enjoy Courgette & Mint Gose as it’s served alongside a specially designed seasonal set menu curated by Rogan & Co Head Chef Tom Reeves as he showcases ingredients from some of the finest local suppliers and producers only a few miles from the restaurant door.
Fell is a brewery based in South Cumbria, producing craft beer that is deeply rooted in its surroundings. Its founder Tim Bloomer grew up locally and recalls tales of hearing about a “mysterious chef from Southampton” who was moving to Cartmel.
Simon Rogan has since gone on to shape Cartmel into the gastronomical hotspot we know now. Simon’s collaboration with Fell Brewery reflects their mutual appreciation for the bounty and deep-seated affinity to the local area, exploring its unique seasonality and celebrating the people that work on its land.
Growing locally has allowed Simon to add unique ingredients to his Lake District restaurants menus, but it also helped secure supply, reflect seasonality and reduce the restaurant’s food miles. Our Farm drives the menus, with dishes based on what’s available and in its prime. The relationship between farm and kitchen is indelibly linked – almost symbiotic in nature focussed entirely on the seasonal growing cycle.
This approach has inspired like-minded businesses both internationally and closer to home. One such is Fell Brewery, based in South Cumbria, founded by local Tim Bloomer, who with his team produces craft beer that is deeply rooted in its surroundings.
Tim’s approach to brewing using locally sourced and produced ingredients has become increasingly important as the Brewery sets out its stall to show how a small, independent brewery can have a positive impact on its local surroundings, economy and environment.
Liam Fitzpatrick Our Farm Head Chef said: “After an excellent harvest of courgettes, and some long hours of processing the juice from it, I am really pleased with the result. This very fresh springtime beer, is nice and light and I for one will certainly enjoy a drop on a warm summer’s evening in the garden at home served alongside some fresh seafood or fish cooked on the BBQ.’’
Nicolas Perdrier Operations Manager with the Simon Rogan restaurant group remarked: “Our ethos is underpinned by who we work with, and we only consider teaming up with producers if they operate in the same way we do, so responsible, sustainably-minded and local wherever possible. Fell Brewery align with us on so many levels and we are proud to serve our second collaborative beer as part of our ‘Local Heroes ‘celebrations at Rogan & Co later this month.’’
‘’When we were approached by Simon’s team to see if we could incorporate some of these classic Rogan ingredients into a beer, I saw the value straight away and understood entirely. At Fell, we are striving to embrace our surroundings more in everything we do, to be a brewery that is truly of this amazing place. What better place to learn than beside the team that puts that at the very heart of everything they do.’’ Remarked Tim Bloomer, Founder of Fell Brewery.
