Greek Beer Awards are announcing their judges

The lineup of international judges has started to form.

A beer competition is nothing without the beers and its judges. People who are experienced and know very well how to judge beer are crucial for the success of a competition, as they decide the best beers for each category. A nice and interesting group is when judges are from developed brewing countries and countries that are still “young” in the industry. The Greek Beer Awards are happy to announce that old friends will join our Head Judge, Maurizio Maestrelli in his “quest” for the best beers, in Athens.

Last year’s fantastic judges Tibor Kantor, Bill Simmons, and Giorgio Marconi have confirmed their presence in Athens for 2024. Last year Tibor was guessing if he would taste a beer with a “strange” Greek ingredient and he guessed right as one of the beers had Mastic flavor. Chios Wheat with Mastic excited the judges and named it Top Ale of the competition.

Shachar Hertz from Israel, an experienced judge, who is attending panels all over the world, and owner of beer specialist shop in Tel-Aviv, is returning to the competition since 2019, when he judged at the Greek Beer Awards. Judith Boyle is entering the competition for the first time. The beverages lecturer from TU Dublin is joining us after her sister Susan, back in 2020. See all the judges of 2024 here.

About the Greek Beer Awards: The Greek Beer Awards is the only international beer competition after blind tasting in Greece. It was held for the first time in 2017 and this year it was extended to countries in Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean. Breweries, microbreweries, and nomadic breweries participate in the competition, which send their samples to be tested by experienced and renowned judges from abroad, who are specially invited for this purpose to our country. With the motto: “We support good brews since 2017”, the annual Greek beer festival aims, among other things, to bring Greek beers into contact with the rest of the world.
