Burton IPA 200

1822 was a pivotal year in the history of Burton upon Trent, the starting point for decades of growth that would turn this sleepy Midlands town into the Brewing Capital of the World. The event that started the transformation happened late in the year when Samuel Allsopp produced the first commercial Burton brewed India Pale Ale; this was sent to India in December of that year and started a battle between London Brewer George Hodgson and not only Allsopp but also other Burton brewers: Bass, Worthington and Salt for dominance in the Indian market.

SAVE THE DATE: Friday 11th November 2022, from 11am

Guild members and guests are welcome to attend a series of talks and a social gathering to help mark this special anniversary. The event will begin mid-morning at The Constitutional Club, with talks lasting throughout the day. There were also be a commemorative plaque unveiling by Mr Jamie Allsopp, the Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandson of Samuel. After the lectures, attendees are then welcome to continue the festivities at The Coopers Tavern, 43 Cross St, Burton-on-Trent DE14 1EG where a special version of Allsopp’s IPA will be pouring.
