Ola Dubh 30 has been aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park old single malt whisky – specifically the 30 year old as well as some even more venerable expressions. Because of the limited availability of these casks, this is the first bottling of Ola Dubh 30 since 2009.
Launched as a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Ola Dubh (or “Black Oil”) is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the 19th century, the deliciously rich, dark Ola Dubh was the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the first with genuine provenance.
Only 20,000 bottles of Ola Dubh 30 have been produced of which 80% is destined for export markets, predominantly the USA and Brazil. This latest variant of Ola Dubh has been selected to commemorate Harviestoun’s 30th anniversary; the award-winning brewery was established on 5th October 1983.
Ola Dubh 30 pours deep brown with a burgundy flush and a head the colour of milled oatmeal. On the nose it has top notes of fresh heather and honey, subtly toasted malts and vanilla, balanced with hints of red fruit and distant smoke. The flavour has subtle wine-like notes; from bitter chocolate and espresso beans into a sustained, oaked conclusion. The long, oaky finish is redolent of pine resin, juniper, perfumed honey and shows traces of peat.
Available from the Harviestoun website and in selected UK accounts, including The Connaught Hotel and The Square as well as Fortnum & Mason and specialist retailers, Ola Dubh 30 will be priced at £10.00 for a 330ml bottle.
Chris Miller, Managing Director, said: “This bottling has been a long time coming and continues a 30-year tradition of top quality craft brewing and innovation at Harviestoun. It is the first time that we have used first-fill sherry casks which add even greater depth. Ola Dubh continues to excite enthusiasts the world over and we strive to make enough beer to meet demand while maintaining the highest standards.”
