Hop Burns & Black is coming to Deptford

London’s most awarded bottle shop, Hop Burns & Black, will open its second branch in Deptford this summer.

Hop Burns & Black opened in Peckham Rye/East Dulwich in 2014 as an outlet for the founders’ three greatest obsessions – craft beer, hot sauce and vinyl records (the Hop, Burns and Black of the name), along with an increasing focus on natural and organic wine, cider and small-batch spirits.

The new location, under the arches of Deptford Station, is a small but perfectly formed version of Hop Burns & Black’s Peckham branch. It’s perfectly placed for commuters to stop in on their way home, and being just one stop from London Bridge, it’s an easy journey for visitors looking to stock up too.

Founder Jen Ferguson says, “We’ve been looking for the perfect site in Deptford for ages. We love its strong sense of community and support for independent business. The area is fast gaining a reputation as a destination for great food and drink and we’re excited to add a world-class bottle shop into the mix.”

Hop Burns & Black is renowned for its selection, including 350+ of the world’s most sought after craft beers from breweries such as Cloudwater, Verdant, Mikkeller, Omnipollo and more. However, celebrating all things SE London has always been at the heart of the business.

Jen says, “We love living in SE London and have always sought to be a local shop for local people, celebrating local businesses. We’re probably the only bottle shop to have a specialist SE London section and have been huge supporters of Deptford’s resident breweries Villages and, more recently, Brick since they opened. We’re really looking forward to highlighting their wares, along with many more awesome South London producers, in our new Deptford branch.”

Further expansion is planned, including the procurement of warehouse space for Hop Burns & Black’s growing online business.

Co-founder Glenn Williams says, “It’s an interesting time for independent beer retail, with supermarkets flexing their buying power and increasing their range and multinationals like AB In-Bev trying to muscle in on the act, but our business is going from strength to strength.

“Our strategy of steady, sustainable growth and a hybrid model – takeaway, drink-in, get it delivered –  has proven very successful. and our new Deptford shop allows us to reach even more customers, at the same time as we look to grow our online arm. We now do 30% of sales online – as with our bricks and mortar outlets, online customers shop with us for our extensive selection and exceptional customer service. Our growth is curtailed only by space constraints for storage and fulfilment, which we hope to resolve in the coming months.”

Hop Burns & Black Deptford will open at Arch 1, Deptford Railway Station, SE8 4NS, in June.
