January 2023: London’s leading street food organisation, KERB, is heading to the heart of Europe to launch the follow up to their successful first food hall, Seven Dials Market. The next step for KERB and Seven Dials Market is Berlin, converting the famous IMAX cinema at the Sony Centre am Potsdamer Platz into a two storey food and drink extravaganza inspired by the building’s cinematic heritage, and showcasing the very best of Berlin’s world class food and drink scene. The follow up to Seven Dials Market is due to launch in 2024 and will provide jobs for upwards of 200 Berliners.
KERB plan to hire a Berlin-based team to lead the operation, and work with the very best Berlin vendors and German wine and beer producers to build a food hall befitting the cultural diversity and culinary deliciousness of the city. The Berlin operation spans 2200 sqm and will play host to 12 independent food operators and four bars. The hunt for brilliant Berlin food operators has begun and KERB encourages all those interested in being involved to visit www.kerbfood.com/berlin.
Like in London, KERB will develop an incubation and accelerator program for local owner-operated businesses, offering a spread of live workshops and consultations alongside a digital training platform to develop the very best food talent coming out of the city. Social and environmental sustainability will also be high on the agenda with progressive and wide-reaching targets focussing on lower carbon footprint, locality and reuse.
Simon Mitchell, CEO of KERB, says: “KERB’s vision has always been to bring joy to unexpected locations, breathing life, colour and deliciousness into the urban fabric. We are delighted to be working with the Sony Centre to develop a world-beating food hall in the heart of Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, in a brilliant building, working alongside the very best of the Berlin food scene. We are looking forward to becoming a major part of the fabric of the city, supporting the wider neighbourhood development in bringing world class arts, culture and hospitality back to Potsdamer Platz.”
Seven Dials Market plays host to 25,000 customers a week, providing 300 jobs for Londoners, generating revenue of £15m a year.
The new food hall is another milestone in the refurbishment project undertaken at Sony Center am Potsdamer Platz. Some 20 years after the opening of the mixed-use asset, co-owners Oxford Properties Group and Norges Bank Investment Management are investing over €200 million to update and transform the historic destination. Planned investments include the refurbishment and upgrade of all office buildings, the cinema, retail and restaurant areas, as well as improved green and outdoor areas.
