Licensee couple toast Best Bar None success

Husband and wife licensees Danny and Karen Williams are jointly celebrating success in Nottingham’s Best Bar None Awards – despite running separate town centre venues.

Pit & Pendulum, where Danny is general manager, and Squares, managed by Karen, are both serial winners in the BBN programme, having picked up honours every year since the Nottingham awards were launched in 2010. Both bars are owned by managed pub and bar operator TCG.

The 2013 awards saw Squares named Best Large Pub in the Judges’ Choice section, while Pit and Pendulum was Best Large Pub in the Public Choice.

Danny said: “We’ve been the Public Choice every time the awards have been held, which is a great tribute from our customers and testimony to the hard work all our staff put into ensuring that we are a safe, well-run venue. As always, it’s great that both Karen and I were on stage collecting awards.”

Karen added: “There’s a little friendly rivalry between us, but the BBN awards are a reminder that we’re both working for the same goal – ensuring that people coming into Nottingham for a night out have a choice of great venues run to the highest professional standards.”

Best Bar None is a national scheme supported by the Home Office aimed at promoting responsible management and operation of licensed premises. It is run by the Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID).

David Lucas, chair of the Nottingham BID’s licensing advisory group, said: “In Nottingham, we have a vast array of top quality venues that all play a role in helping our night-time economy thrive. Achieving a Best Bar None award requires the ability to demonstrate strong practices and systems that aim to maintain and improve the very highest standards of operation.”

Nigel Wright, chief operating officer of TCG, said: “Squares and Pit & Pendulum are among our flagship venues, and Danny and Karen are among the best GMs in the industry. Their success yet again in the Nottingham BBN Awards is a tribute to their commitment and the dedication of the teams at both bars.”
