New edition of A Brewery in Bedford

A new edition of A Brewery in Bedford, the story of Wells & Co, previously Charles Wells, has a big input from Guild members. It’s written by Roger Protz and designed by Dale Tomlinson, with photography by Cath Harries.

Roger says: “At a time when, sadly, so many pubs and breweries are closing, it’s been encouraging to be involved in a good news story. Since Wells sold their Eagle Brewery to Marston’s, the family has invested in Brewpoint in Bedford, which includes an eco-friendly brewery, taproom and restaurant.

“As well as running 160 pubs in Bedfordshire and surrounding counties, Wells also has 17 pubs in France that account for 30 per cent of beer production — the French now have a liking for British ale!”

As well as telling the story of how a former merchant seaman, Charles Wells, launched a brewery in 1876, the book also stresses the key role played by his wife Josephine, who advised Charles on all aspects of brewing and encouraged several of their children to join the brewery.

The book is available from Brewpoint at https://www.brewpoint.co.uk/merch/a-brewery-in-bedford-third-edition
