Just five years since Citra was launched as Oakham Ales fifth permanent beer, it has claimed the top spot at the acclaimed innovative brewery based in Peterborough.
Oakham Ales was the first UK brewer to launch a single varietal beer using the Citra hop, for occasional brews in November 2009. The beer, has for the first time, overtaken JHB (Jeffrey Hudson Bitter), which has been the brewery’s best seller for the past twenty-three years and continues to grow its market share.
The beer was a result of the Brewery’s Production Director, John Bryan, being “bowled over” by the Citra hop on his annual hop research trip to the USA. John arranged for a batch to be flown back to the UK which led to the launch of Citra.
Customer response was so positive when it was first brewed that it earned a permanent place in Oakham Ales cask and bottle range in 2011. Citra, with a 4.2% A.B.V. is a light, refreshing beer with pungent grapefruit, lychee and gooseberry aromas leading to a dry bitter finish.
John Bryan, Oakham Ales Production Director said: “I am extremely proud that the beer I created just five years ago, is now such a fantastic seller. I knew as soon as I came across the Citra hop that it was something special and it seems that our customers agree”.

We are not afraid to try something different and being a smaller brewer, we have the flexibility and independence to follow our instincts and produce innovative beers. Citra has sold exceptionally well and we are now selling in excess of one million pints per annum.
Citra is available in nationally through the free trade, selected distributors and multiple retailers.
