More than 700 pubs registered for charity event
Pubs, clubs and bars have just over a month to register for the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz, running from 9-15 May. With more than 700 pubs already signed up, organisers PubAid are confident this year’s event will hit an all-time high in pub and customer participation and money raised for charities including Shelter, this year’s quiz partner.
All pubs signing up to host a quiz will receive a free fundraising pack including posters and social media assets, to help them host a quiz that brings customers into their pub for a fun-filled evening that raises money for a worthy cause.
For the first time, PubAid is working with online quiz platform Kwizzbit, which allows licensees to host a fun pub quiz on their smartphone, with technology making it easier to run and offering features such as real time leader boards that make it more engaging for customers. A traditional ‘pen and paper’ version is also available.
For more information and to register, visit: www.pubaid.co.uk/quiz. Pubs need to register by 22 April to receive a printed pack or can sign up later and print the materials themselves.
PubAid co-founder Des O’Flanagan said: “We’re delighted to bring back the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz after two years of disruption due to the pandemic. There’s certainly an appetite among licensees and their customers for a fun event that’s in person rather than on Zoom, and we’re seeing a response on a par with pre-Covid years.
“With a month to go, there’s still time for licensees to sign up for this quiz which is completely free, easy to run and a great way to remind customers what they love about the pub. It’s also raising much-needed funds for worthy causes including Shelter, whose work has never been more important.”
He added: “Although we’re promoting 9-15 May as the main week for the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz, licensees can choose to run it any time that month, or in the first week of June to coincide with the long weekend of Platinum Jubilee celebrations.”
The World’s Biggest Pub Quiz is being promoted on the www.useyourlocal.com website, which is visited by one million pub-lovers every month. All pubs hosting a quiz are listed here, and on the PubAid Quiz website.
In addition to individual pubs, many pub companies are supporting the quiz, including: Admiral Taverns, Brakspear, Ember Inns, Everards, Fuller, Smith & Turner, Greene King, Hall & Woodhouse, Joseph Holt, Marston’s, Punch Pubs, Robinsons, Shepherd Neame, St Austell Brewery, Star Pubs & Bars, Stonegate, Trust Inns, Wadworth and Wells & Co.
Homeless charity Shelter was chosen as the charity partner following the Covid lockdown. Currently, 91 families become homeless every day in England. Money raised in the Quiz will help Shelter give information, advice and support to those facing homelessness. Pubs are encouraged to host the quiz in aid of Shelter, but have the freedom to support another charity, or divide funds raised between Shelter and a cause closer to home.
Max Newton, Head of Community Fundraising at Shelter, said: “We’re really encouraged by response to the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz and confident that we’ll see registrations accelerate over the next month. It’s great to see that a majority of pubs are choosing to support Shelter: every pound raised will help us to be there for anyone facing homelessness.”
The World’s Biggest Pub Quiz was launched in 2016 and has raised a total of £750,000 for hundreds of charities.
