Green Light IPA, Powderkeg Brewery’s alcohol-free flagship beer won Champion Low/No Alcohol Beer in both keg and can at the South West’s Indy Beer Awards in 2025, and will contest national champion on two fronts in March this year. It also won a coveted Two Star Great Taste Award, for ‘outstanding’ flavour, a medal given to just 10% of products.
To celebrate a successful year, and coincide with Dry January and Veganuary, Powderkeg are offering 6 Green Light cans free when you buy 24.
Talking about the success of Green Light, head brewer John Magill says,
We’ve been brewing Green Light since 2018, and it was recognised as best in the UK as far back as 2020. While there is now lots of bandwagon-jumping from big-money businesses that will ultimately win the market, it’s really important to recognise the massive value of independent businesses as often being the real innovators and purveyors of excellence.”
“We pioneered alc-free because we believed in it. There was no hype at the time, most people questioned what the point of it was, and their only experience was the non-alc lager brands of the 80s which- I don’t think I’m putting my head far above the parapet here- were absolutely awful. We knew we could make a beer that was streets ahead of what had come before.”
With limited resources, the team developed a process indistinguishable from classic brewing from the outside. They used no special equipment and no engineered ingredients, just a few clever technical tricks and classic malt and hops. After just two attempts they had produced one of the UK’s first modern alc-free beer brands, one that still stands up today as one of the best, as the awards cabinet and legions of fans will attest.
John continued, “Our R&D budget for Green Light was literally £100. A couple of years later a certain Dublin brand spent £60 million to follow in our footsteps!” “But joking aside, it’s really important that we highlight the value of independent producers here. Microbreweries are where craft beer was born and where the low-and-no concept was developed into quality, modern products.
Business Co-owner Jess Magill went on, “Low and No as a category continues to grow, with more and more people enjoying these beers, and that’s really great to see. We have refined Green Light over the years, really packing in the flavour and developing it to also be vegan and gluten-free, so now it really is an any-time beer for anyone.”
