Shepherd Neame’s 1698 is officially world class

Faversham-based brewer Shepherd Neame has been honoured with a silver medal for its popular Kentish ale 1698 at this year’s International Brewing & Cider Awards 2024.

Originally brewed to celebrate Shepherd Neame’s tercentenary, 1698 (6.5% ABV) is a bottle-conditioned beer, and was recognised with the medal in the International Smallpack Ale category.

The International Brewing & Cider Awards, known as the brewing industry ‘Oscars’, took place in Manchester over three days at the end of March, with beers and ciders evaluated by a panel of 38 judges from around the world.

It is the latest in a series of honours for Shepherd Neame’s beers, with other recent wins including gold medals for Bishops Finger (5.2%), India Pale Ale (6.1%) and 1698 (6.5%) at the British Bottlers’ Institute Awards, and a gold medal for Spitfire Amber Ale (4.2%) at the Great British Food Awards.

Shepherd Neame’s Director of Brewing Mike Unsworth said: “We are delighted that 1698 has been recognised on an international level. This is a testament to our team’s passion and knowledge, and our commitment to quality and innovation. This fantastic accolade shows once again that our beer is world class.”
