Berwick-upon-Tweed; November 6, 2025: Simpsons Malt Limited, the fifth-generation family malting and agricultural merchanting business, has published its 2025 Sustainability Report.
The annual report outlines developments made by the company on many of its ongoing sustainability projects and initiatives, as it seeks to achieve net zero Scope 1 & 2 emissions and carbon neutral malting barley and distilling wheat production by 2030.
In the past 12 months, the company has reached several key milestones, including its first B
Corp recertification and the commissioning of a renewable Energy Centre neighbouring its Tweed Valley Maltings. Powered by curtailed wind energy and supported by biomass, the Energy Centre has reduced the malt production carbon footprint at the UK’s largest malting site by 72%, while reducing Scope 1 & 2 emissions company-wide by up to 55%.
In addition to environmental sustainability, the report also captures how the company has supported its colleagues, customers, suppliers and communities throughout the past year.
Report highlights
Simpsons Malt Limited has completed its first B Corp recertification. A score improvement from 89.6 to 130.7 reflects meaningful progress across all five areas of the B Impact Assessment framework: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers.
The new, renewable Energy Centre neighbouring the company’s Tweed Valley Maltings in Berwick-upon-Tweed is now online. It has cut the carbon footprint of malt production at the site by 72% and has reduced company-wide Scope 1 & 2 emissions by up to 55%. The malt production carbon footprint at the company’s Tweed Valley Maltings is now just 44kg/CO2e.
Working with partners Yara UK and OCI, the company has expanded the use of lowcarbon fertilisers across its Growers Groups, achieving verified on-farm GHG reductions of up to 15% without compromising yield or quality.
A 76% positive response rate was achieved in the annual Great Place To Work® survey, while the Salary Extras employee benefits platform was also launched.
A total of £162,083 was donated to charities, schools and local good causes in 2024, continuing the company’s commitment to give back more than 1% of profit before tax each year.
There are more details about the company’s Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) “Growing a Better Planet” Award win, which acknowledges leadership in advancing sustainable agriculture in partnership with growers. The company also achieved 100% FSA Gold verification in its distilling wheat Farm Management Group.
