On Thursday 6th June 2013 The Hoxton White Horse Pub launches as a modern take on a traditional east end pub. Think British craft beer (especially London-centric beers), an unrivalled juke box; stacked with glorious classic sounds of every genre, and mouth-watering Pieminster pies with a nod to East End quality. The transformation sees white tiles, aged oak bar top; and once inside you’ll see, hear and feel the good times that this pearl of Hoxton has to offer. For the last three months it has been through a spectacular refurbishment inside and outside, bringing this vibrant space entrenched in history in line with some of London’s finest modern cask pubs.
The launch will also see the arrival of the hidden Bolt Whisk(e)y Bar in the basement. The now unrecognisable downstairs space is a stylish and lavish offering, complimenting the upstairs traditional east end public house. The offering downstairs is subtle and not dissimilar to a stylish dive bar with a killer selection of vintage rums and whiskies waiting to be discovered by those who grace the bar. It offers an amazing selection of spirits and sumptuous booths that you just sink into when seated; it’s hard to conceive leaving. The Bolt brings classic English style back to its east end stomping ground.
Whilst keeping the heart of this famous watering hole intact, the interior is spectacular and fully encompasses modern Hoxton and east end London in general. An award winning roster of cask ales, beers and spirits are on offer, Meantime Brewery the award winning brewery based in Greenwich will be our house brewery, serving the London lager, Pale ale, Stout and a seasonal variation. Other notable additions are the curious Brew -Brewed by Chapel Down Winery (re-pitched using champagne yeast made to make there sparkling wines), Fordham Copperhead American Craft beer ads an international take on the back bar along with London Fields Wheat Beer brewed in a Classic German style Hefeweizen and finally for those summer months ahead Aspalls Suffolk Cider for those of a sweeter palate.
The newly re-furbished site will cater for all – be it the after work crowd, beer and ale connoisseurs or music aficionados. The venue gives a nod back to its traditional nature, offering a range of London’s beer as standard, guest ales from around the UK each month, and an ever changing line up on the pumps. Even as a regular there will be an element of discovery each time you walk through the door. Look forward to later additions from the Hackney Brewery, London Fields Brewery, Moncada Brewery, Redemption Brewery and ELB in the coming months.
Simon Griggs owner of the Hoxton White Horse comments here: “The new era of the Hoxton White Horse is about fine ales, good times and good people. We’ve recognised what makes an east end pub truly great and brought we’ve brought it into the present day. From the lunch time and after work crowd, through to evening revellers we have something for everyone. We’re very excited about the launch and I feel that we’ve met this in the look and feel of our offering. The rejuvenation of the Hoxton market is underway, and the launch of the Hoxton White Horse will further add to the credentials of the area.”
The music offering is an important fixture in what owner Simon Griggs first considered when going about creating his dream pub, other than just darn fine beer (tick), the next on list was a Jukebox. In looking into various options, and wondering what condition his 7 inch collections were in, they stumbled on a 80s CD jukebox with green neon lights, a man in Kent who can fit it, and from there delved into a 2 month odyssey of listening to and buying some incredible music.
Simon and his co-researchers have nerdish delved into the realms of their own psyches, this dream juke box has everything from Eric Clapton’s, stoner 13yr old Woodstock dreaming’s, and some curveball’s thrown in there too. In the spirit of High Fidelity the Juke Box relies heavily on some nerdy lists such as best live albums, and many late whisky sodden nights have been spent debating the merits of Prince’s various eras and their merits (or otherwise). The Juke box is stacked with classic pub music that they’d want to hear somewhere else, compiled entirely selfishly to ensure that it’s all killer not filler, rest assured there will be no shoddy Spotify playlist’s playing ridiculous edits here.
Food wise like Reeves and Mortimor every quality pint needs to go with a delicious Pie and for that the hugely popular Pieminister provide their delicious modern take on England’s best love food. Each and every one of Pieminister’s original range of pies is an award winner – they contain only fresh, responsibly sourced, free range, natural ingredients many of which are sourced from the West Country. Pieminister remains a family-run business, making all its products in-house where Jon and Tristan still personally oversee the making and baking of them all. Their emphasis on this complements the ideology behind the re-launch of the Hoxton White Horse.
With the doors open to all, everyone has a reason to come and visit the finest homely drinking establishment in Hoxton. The Hoxton White Horse is….the modern East End done right.
