THWAITES USES ITS LOAF TO CREATE SPECIAL FESTIVAL ALE

As preparations get underway for the 17th annual, Manchester Food and Drink Festival this September, event sponsor, Thwaites, has brewed the first batch of a special themed festival ale.

Use Your Loaf is the creation of local beer enthusiast Iain Devine, from Sale, who won a competition for would-be-brewers to come up with suggestions for a brew that would capture the spirit of Manchester. Iain’s malt loaf inspired beer concept impressed judges and perfectly typified Manchester, which is home of the UK’s largest producer of malt loaf – Soreen.

With the help of master brewers at Thwaites, Iain’s ale has now been created. The 3.9% ABV ale has characteristically deep malty, fruit flavours throughout, expertly balanced with Bramling Cross and Pacific Gem hops. The final recipe came about after several trials conducted with Iain and Thwaites head brewer, Dave Goodwin. The process ensured the beer captured the unique malt loaf flavour in a glass.

Lee Williams, Thwaites marketing manager, commented: “We are really pleased with Use Your Loaf, which has been created using Manchester’s finest malt loaf, Soreen. It is the perfect combination of flavours to accompany the festival and represent Manchester – complex, original but with an easy going finish!”

As well as being involved in the brewing process, Iain will have the honour of pulling the first pint of Use Your Loaf at the festival.

Iain added: “It’s been a fascinating journey creating a brand new beer for the city! I thought that malt loaf, being created in Manchester, but also lending itself well to great beer flavours, would make for a great new brew for the city. Having tasted my first pint of it this week, I’m convinced that my hunch paid off! I look forward to enjoying many more at the Festival!”

Use Your Loaf will be available at the Thwaites Festival of Beer, in the Tasting Room bar at The Festival Hub on Albert Square from 18th – 21st September.
