WADWORTH’S WINTER WONDERS – Old Timer clocks up its 50, and Dray Bells rings in the festive season

Say a loud ‘yes!’ and punch the air, because the time is almost upon us for the reappearance of the wonderful Wadworth winter beers.

Amongst the Wadworth seasonal beer team, there are few ales that elicit as much love and affection as Old Timer and Dray Bells – a pair that have heritage at their hearts, but with their flavours skilfully crafted for a winter season, fit perfectly into the modern drinking calendar.

Who doesn’t love an Old Timer?  Rich, dark and chestnutty it’s hearty and delicious, with an abv of 5.8%, strong enough to put hairs on the chest while at the same time warming the cockles of the heat. This year Wadworth is celebrating 50 years of brewing this popular beer which is still true to the original recipe with its satisfying, malty flavours.

And Christmassy Dray Bells will fill the pubs with festive spirit. With a pump clip that shows the famous Wadworth shire horses battling through the snow on a cold winter’s evening to deliver your pint, you can almost hear those dray bells ringing and feel the frosty nip in the air. As sweet, rich and comforting as a figgy pudding, Dray Bells is made for the cosy pub with a roaring fire. It is a dark mocha coloured beer with a hint of spice and a twist of orange peel. It has an abv of 4.1% and a Christmas cheer factor of 100%.

“There is always a frisson of excitement at the brewery when the first batch of Old Timer is brewed,” says Wadworth Product Marketing Manager, Ellie Alderton. “Whilst we all have to battle with the chilly inconveniences of winter life and travel, we still love the romantic beauty of snow and the fun of festive parties.”

“Our winter beers, each with their own distinctive character, bring the promise of good times with them, and tie into the human instinct to hunker down in the warmth on a cold winter’s night. Cosy refuge from the weather is one of the things our pubs do best – Wadworth customers can be sure of a warm welcome and a pint of real winter cheer.”

The customers love these beers, and many Wadworth managed and tenanted pubs will be stocking up on them – they are also available to the free trade. Old Timer is the first to leave the brewery, with an arrival time in the pubs of late November, and it has staying power throughout January. It is available to the trade in the cask or bottle conditioned 500ml bottles. Dray Bells which is only available in the cask makes a guest appearance through December and over the festive season.
