A Welsh Beer and Pub Association spokesperson said: “If Welsh Government’s ambition is to support businesses who pay a disproportionate level of business rates compared to online competitors, any solution is incomplete without applying lower multipliers to pubs.
“By excluding hospitality, it will cost Welsh pubs an additional £3.9 million pounds every year. At a time when most of the money that goes into pub’s till goes straight back out in bills and taxes, this latest move will not only hurt communities but contradicts the Welsh Government’s own wishes.
“When a pub closes it puts people out of a job, hurts the families who rely on those wages, and deprives communities of their heart and soul.
"However, it’s not too late to change this sad state of affairs and avoid the consequences of unsustainable rates increases for pubs across Wales. The Welsh Government must proceed with meaningful business rates reform so that pubs can remain part of vibrant villages, towns, and communities.”
