Wharfe Bank Brewery celebrate British hops with JD Wetherspoon

Othelia Pump

Wharfe Bank Brewery is resurrecting an old favourite for the upcoming JD Wetherspoon Spring Ale Festival (March 13 – 29, inclusive).

Othelia Gold – a 4.5% abv ale that takes its name from the original name for Otley – is hopped entirely with British hops. Challenger, East Kent Golding, Target, Epic and Pilgrim hops have all made their way into the recipe.

The beer is, as the name suggests, brilliant gold in colour and carries a delicate, fruity aroma backed up by firm biscuit malt in the body which continues to a crisp finish. Othelia Gold is also the only beer in the festival to showcase the Epic hop.

Wharfe Bank’s brewer, Tyler Kiley, says; ‘It’s been really interesting to use Epic hops for the first time. It’s a new hop to us here at Wharfe Bank, and we’ve been impressed with it so far. We’ve brewed Othelia to be supremely balanced in flavour, so that the delicate nature of the hops really shine. I’m really pleased with it, and think you’ll be, too.’

The brewery’s hops are sourced from renowned hop merchant Charles Faram. For more information on British Hops, you can visit www.britishhops.org.uk .

Notes to Editors:

Wharfe Bank Brewery was founded by Martin Kellaway in 2010, initially brewing in the Fox & Newt Brewpub in Leeds. It was at the Fox & Newt that the first batch of Wharfe Bank beers were trialled and tasted by the drinking public.

Not long after, the brewery found a new home in a converted paper mill in Pool-in-Wharfedale, near the popular market town of Otley. Building on the success of beers such as Tether Blond, Camfell Flame and Washburn Best Bitter, Wharfe Bank soon became a pillar of the Yorkshire brewing scene.

After a period of growth, the brewery rebranded in early 2014. The fresh new look incorporated the River Wharfe as a prominent feature, cementing the brewery’s provenance in the brand identity. A fresh range of beers joined the portfolio as Wharfe Bank experimented with style. Now brewing 24 unique beers in addition to the core range, the brewery continue to cater for every palate.

2015’s portfolio continues that evolutionary path, with beers as diverse as Coffee IPA, Milk Stout, California Common and Wheat IPA joining the family alongside the likes of Yorkshire IPA and Ro Sham Bo Session IPA – both of which were moved to the core range after overwhelming customer feedback.

Wharfe Bank are also enjoying success in the export sector, with their beer gaining plaudits in Spain, Italy and, most recently, Serbia – where Yorkshire IPA is becoming a mainstay of the beer scene in Belgrade.

The Wharfe Bank team currently includes Tyler Kiley (Brewer, ex- Friends of Ham, Stew & Oyster, Mr Foley’s Cask Ale House), Mark Evans (Sales Manager, ex – Copper Dragon, Timothy Taylor) and Leigh Linley (Brand Manager, award-winning beer writer and author of the Great Yorkshire Beer books).
