Moorhouse’s historic Old Boss (4.3%) is being rolled out as the special brew for June.
The ale is based on a recipe dating back to the 19th century hey day of the Temperance Movement, when founder William Moorhouse produced much celebrated low strength bottled hop bitters. Old Boss was an award winning brew for the prosperous Burnley brewer and in great demand.
The modern version is robust full strength ale and – following its successful trial last year – it is being released for June as part of the acclaimed brewer’s monthly specials programme for 2012.
A straw coloured bitter, German Brewers Gold hops and Maris Otter malt deliver ‘a subtle grassy aroma with a hint of citrus and spice, followed by slight caramel sweetness on the taste buds leading to a long bitter finish’. The striking pump clip is based on the original bottle label and boasts two awards from the late 1800s.

Now brewing on a new modern state of the art plant, it is wonderful to be able to pay tribute to our heritage by including Old Boss in the specials line up. Previously it was very well received”
Moorhouse’s new £4.2m brewing complex launched last year transforms the Burnley brewery into ‘regional brewer’ status now capable of brewing more than 1000 brewer’s barrels-a-week – some 15 million pints-a-year – and includes a visitor centre, complete with bar and bistro restaurant, and premier training school.
