Ferm Friends – a Farmhouse Collaboration

Farmhouse breweries Burning Sky and Duration Brewing have teamed up to brew a duo of collaborative brews called Ferm Friends.

The first fresh iteration is a 6% Modern Belgian IPA available now in 440ml cans via the brewery’s web shop and will be also be available in keg and can across independent trade retailers up and down the country. A spontaneous barrel aged version to follow in time from Duration’s Fermata Range.

The can label reads:

The first of a fresh and fermata duo of beers made with Burning Sky. A collaboration to share knowledge and revive the Modern Belgian IPA a forgotten and often misaligned style of farmhouse brewing. Softly golden, opening dry and bitter with aromas of melon, spice and hay. Big fruit esters give way to effervescence and a light lingering finish. Farmhouse brewing is nothing without Ferm Friends.

Miranda Hudson – Co founder at Duration says ‘I remember hearing Mark talk as he first embarked on his project – Burning Sky in 2014. It gave me goosebumps to hear someone speak about beer the same way Bates does. I thought, this guy is a renegade for what he believes in – a true outlier. Little did I know 8 years on, our brewery would be built, and we’d be welcoming Burning Sky over for a collab that will be available in two parts!’.

Mark Tranter of Burning Sky says of the collaboration:

‘After a couple of tentative years skirting round each other and covid, it was a pleasure to finally make the pilgrimage to West Acre. More so as I had watched how Bates, Miranda and everyone else at Duration had stuck hard to their plan, through what has been a time for soul searching.

What was clear is that we share the same love of clean and mixed fermentation beers, where drinkability, and a slight of hand is key. The time felt right and the recipes were a joy to work on. The sun shone on our brew days and hopefully the beer(s) taste as good to you as to us’.

Derek Bates Founder and Head Brewer of Duration says:

‘I have long admired the ambition of Burning Sky to raise the profile of slower more considered wild and mixed fermentation beers. Mark joined us over a magical few days to brew two uniquely different versions of the same beer – a clean fresh version and a slow spontaneous barrel aged version. The main difference between them being the yeast profile and tempo of the fermentation process. Mixed ferment beers just need time and patience – so while version 1 of Ferm Friends is now ready, version 2 will be out – well, when it’s ready!’
