Introducing Waking the Artist – the beer collaboration between North Brewing and Leeds 2023

North Brewing are proud to support Leeds’ Year of Culture through a series of beer collaborations celebrating the project.

Leeds based brewery North Brewing Co are excited to collaborated with Leeds 2023 on a series of beers celebrating culture in the city.

The first of these beers, titled Waking the Artist, launched nationwide on Wednesday 19th April. The beer label was born out of Leeds 2023’s call for local artist submissions as part of The Awakening. The chosen design, ‘Mood’ by Claudia Bowler, has been reproduced on the beer label, spanning the whole canvas of the can.

North Brewing took inspiration from the spirit of Leeds 2023’s mission to make culture accessible to all when deciding on the style of their beer. The brewers designed a 4.2% Pale Ale using Citra, El Dorado and Centennial hops, with a focus on drinkability and refreshment. The hops combine to bring flavours of mango, candied orange and pink grapefruit to the beer resulting in a tropical burst as vibrant and energetic as the place we call home.

The beer is available across North’s joyous family of bars which stretch across Leeds and West Yorkshire, but also include Birmingham and Manchester. Online shoppers can get their hands on a can via the North website, and the beer will be making its way to a series of bars celebrating culture in the city. Look out for its appearance at Leeds 2023’s WOW Barn in May!

John Gyngell, co-founder of North Brewing says:

“Art and culture has always been a massive part of what we do at North: From the designs of our cans to the exhibitions in our bars to the people who we work with. When we heard that Leeds 2023 were going ahead with their City of Culture plans we jumped at the chance to be involved. I cannot wait to relax with a ‘Waking the Artist’ at a cultural event this Spring.”

Heather Thornton from LEEDS 2023 commented: “It’s really exciting to see LEEDS 2023 collaborating with North Brewing on a new Waking the Artist Beer. The Waking the Artist Project led on from the fantastic ballot entries at the Awakening and it’s really showed how creative the people of Leeds are and we’re thrilled that the North Brewing x LEEDS 2023 will be the final piece of the project and the people of Leeds can make a cheers to creativity!”

About North

North was founded by John Gyngell and Christian Townsley in Leeds in 1997. They opened their original venue, North Bar, with the shared vision of blending global craft beer and local breweries, interesting wines and spirits, great quality food, and eclectic music and art. North Bar quickly became renowned for its alternative approach, quirky style and excellent, friendly service.

They have since grown to eight venues in Leeds and the surrounding area: from Preston Bar nestled in leafy Oakwood, to the cycling hub at North Bar Social in Otley, to their slick city centre taproom on Sovereign Square. With growth has come a string of awards and accolades from the likes of Imbibe, The Observer, The Publican Awards and the Society of Independent Brewers. In 2015 they founded North Brewing Co, a global brewery with an independent heart, born out of a love of food, drink and hospitality.

In 2022 North took their first steps outside their home county, opening their ninth venue in Birmingham, followed closely by a tenth in Manchester. Beyond a passion for great beer, North is built on creating communities of like-minded people, offering exciting and innovative spaces that are inclusive, friendly and fun.
