Orpington Club wins Best Club in London

Orpington Liberal Club wins CAMRA’s Greater London Club of the Year award

Orpington Liberal Club has won CAMRA’s Greater London Club of the Year award for 2013.  Each year, clubs across Greater London are reviewed by CAMRA members to find the best one.  The Club is judged on its beer quality and its contribution to encouraging people to try real ale.

Peter Rolfe, Chairman of the local CAMRA Bromley branch, said, “The Club has made a terrific contribution to the quality and variety of real ale and real cider available in Orpington and Bromley.  They’ve shown what can be done with limited resources and it would be great to see many other clubs following their example”.

The Club, which is run and staffed by volunteers, has a constantly changing range of beers and had served an amazing 125 real ales by the end of August , of which 52 were from local breweries.  In addition, it offers a choice of real ciders.  But it also hosts a range of activities including a number of clubs: folk, folk and blues and bridge as well as  jazz events and quiz nights thus encouraging all sorts of different people to visit.

Duncan Borrowman, the Club’s Chairman, said, “We are delighted to be given this accolade.  It’s a great recognition of all the effort the team has made to serve a great range of real ales.  We hope that it will encourage others to come and visit us in the future and see what they have been missing”.

The Orpington Liberal Club now goes forward to compete against clubs from all over the country for the supreme title of CAMRA’s National Club of the Year

The Greater London award will be presented to the Club on Friday, 4 October 2013 at 8pm. There will be eight beers, six of them from local breweries.
