The Lager: Craft Brewery Anspach & Hobday announce the launch of The Lager as part of their core range following their recent expansion to Croydon

Independent London-based craft brewery Anspach & Hobday have announced the online launch of The Lager, a brand-new core range defying the disruption of the coronavirus pandemic with new beer to cheer.

The Croydon expansion includes the installation of brand new horizontal lager tanks, to ensure that The Lager is matured in the right conditions to produce a clean, flavourful and crisp lager. Each brew of The Lager will spend at least four weeks in the horizontal tanks to produce an accurate, true to the style Lager.

Anspach & Hobday are offering a super fresh same day dispatch service once the lager is canned on Wednesday 22nd April, ensuring customers the freshest possible beer. Pre-orders are being taken from now until Wednesday 22nd at 5pm for the deliveries that will be made before the weekend.

As part of the Lockdown Lager Launch: Live Co-founder and Head Of Production Paul Anspach, the ‘Braumeister’ behind the beer, will be hosting an Instagram Live Feed commencing at 6pm Friday 1st May. Paul will be joined by journalist and lager expert Mark Dredge amongst other guests and will be discussing the style, process and flavour behind The Lager.

The horizontal tanks allow the brewers at Anspach & Hobday to manage the cold maturation phase of lager brewing properly, allowing the yeast in the beer to perform in a stress free manner. The horizontal tanks reduce the hydrostatic pressure on the yeast, allowing it to go about its work comfortably. The long, flat bottoms of the tanks increases the contact area between settled yeast and the beer, again aiding in the yeast in their work.

The German malt and European hops combined with London water produces what Anspach & Hobday believe to be their true London Lagerbier. The Lager will be available in 440ml cans at present. Once pubs and bars are able to operate a normal service, we will be producing kegs as soon as possible.

Chairman and Co-Founder Jack Hobday says: “For many their first beer is a lager, too often a terrible lager. As beer aficionados, we set out on a journey through the world of beers. From pales to IPAs, to stouts and sours, from traditional heroes to modern adjunct monsters. We look for new and different styles to try, picking up favourites along the way. Sooner or later that exploration can lead us back to the beginning: The lager, this time a great one.”

Head of Production and Co-Founder Paul Anspach says: ‘‘When we decided we wanted to start brewing a lager, we knew we had to do it properly. Horizontal tanks were part of the plan from the beginning, and our crowdfunding campaign enabled us to make the investment. The final component is time. Lagers cannot be rushed, and all of ours will spend at least 4 weeks maturing in the horizontal tanks.’’
