Situated opposite Alexandra Palace station on the northeastern entrance to Alexandra Park, The Starting Gate has long been a pint stop for thirsty commuters and dog-walking locals alike. Following an extensive refurbishment to smarten the interior and polish up those beer taps, the North London pub re-opens with a lip-smacking menu of British classics, a competitive roll call of craft beers and, just in time for summer, a charming courtyard garden.
Housed in a Grade-II-listed building, the pub’s interior boasts a striking new look, with wood-paneled walls and a host of cosy nooks and crannies helping to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The Starting Gate is sited on the original starting point of the historic Alexandra Park Racecourse, and that history is celebrated with a number of equine artworks and classic prints from the pub’s illustrious past dotted around the walls.
A central bar offers a communal focal point, while the pub’s spacious back room has plentiful booth seating for drinkers and diners alike. During warmer weather, the courtyard offers the ideal setting for al fresco cocktails, while also creating a summery outside-inside feel when the doors are thrown open.
Getting things going behind the bar, The Starting Gate has a host of new draft drops available including a selection of speciality beers, lagers and ciders such as Camden Hells, Purity Longhorn IPA and Redhook Longhammer. Non-hop fans can check out the expertly curated wine list or tuck into one of the homemade house tipples including spice-your-own Bloody Marys.
Food will focus on traditional pub dishes such as the Bar Platter with Pork Sliders, B&C Wedges, Squid, BBQ Wings & Battered Black Pudding; Hake in Cider & Tarragon Batter, Pea Purée & Chips; and 8oz 21-Day Aged Rib-Eye with Fries & Watercress. A range of weekend brunch dishes are also available, including Eggy Bread with Grilled Bacon & Maple Syrup; Yorkshire Gammon Ham, Baked Beef Tomato & Two Free Range Eggs and Eggs Royale. Don’t miss The Starting Gate’s famous Sunday roasts, as well as a range of sandwiches and bar snacks for a lighter lunch.
