WEST, Glasgow’s favourite independent brewery, has launched Heidi-Weisse; a refreshing Bavarian-style wheat beer in bottles just in time for summer.
An homage to WEST founder Petra Wetzel’s happy childhood in rural Franconia (and the name of the original brewery dog), Heidi-Weisse is a brand extension of the brewery’s prize-winning draught Hefeweizen, which many connoisseurs believe to be the best wheat beer on the market.
By law Bavarian wheat beers must contain 50% wheat to barley. At 64% wheat content, Heidi-Weisse is a former SIBA Supreme Craft Beer Champion. Bottled unfiltered, Heidi-Weisse is a complex and refreshing beer or low bitterness and with top notes of clove and banana. It is vegetarian and vegan-friendly.
WEST founder Petra Wetzel said: “Heidi-Weisse is as nutritious and healthy a beer as you will get anywhere! It’s a great beer for the summer: refreshing, easy drinking and packed with wholesomeness from the wheat, hops, water and a little live yeast, which is good for you.
“And it’s great mixed with fresh apple juice (we call it Apfelweiss) which, together with Heidi-Weisse’s banana flavours, must account for at least two of your five a day!”
Hefeweizen is a 5.2% ABV unfiltered wheat beer. A DLG German Gold Medal Winner and SIBA Supreme Champion.
“Hefeweizen aficionados have been asking for their favourite beer to be made available in bottles for some time, but there was limited availability to realise this, given the limited capacity of our original brewery on Glasgow Green,” explained Petra.
“But, following last year’s £5 million investment in our brewery, which multiplied our production capacity ten-fold, we are now able to offer Hefeweizen in bottles under the new Heidi-Weisse label.
“We don’t usually call ourselves ‘craft’ brewers; but Heidi-Weisse really is a hand-crafted beer, brewed from truly natural ingredients, unfiltered, unpasteurised and conditioned in the bottle. We’ve created a wholesome, fresh and natural beer that is nutritious as well as delicious!”
Heidi-Weisse is brewed in Glasgow in strict adherence with the Reiheitsgebot, the German Purity Law of 1516, the oldest food law in the world. It will be available in both on and off-trade, including all major supermarkets across Scotland prior to roll-out throughout the UK.
