World Beer Awards 2022 – Worlds Best announced!

The annual World Beer Awards has revealed the winners in its 2022 competition. There were more than 3,200 beers from more than 50 countries entered into this year’s awards. An international and highly respected judging panel blind tasted and scored the entries across three rounds of judging to identify the best beers in 10 categories.

As the world has been returning to normal, so has the World Beer Awards. After moving online for two years during the Covid-19 pandemic, all tastings for the 2022 competition were held in person again. With heats in Brazil, Chile, Canada, Japan, Germany, the USA, and in the UK for all other entering countries, the awards’ organisers were delighted to welcome back their esteemed judges, some seasoned participants, and some new to the competition.

Adrian Tierney-Jones, Chair of the World Beer Awards, said: “This year the World Beer Awards returned to being judged in person after two years online and I would like to thank the many judges who applied themselves to their tasks with diligence and great professionalism. It was great to see many from around the world. Congratulations naturally go to all the winners whose beers show an exciting snapshot of brewing across the globe today – it is not called the World Beer Awards for nothing and I’m already looking forward to next year’s awards.”

As well as taste quality, design excellence was also judged. With the ever-developing beer industry, the push to get recognised and stand out from the crowd on the shelves has seen some outstanding designs emerging, with a noticeable change to canning.

Listed below are our style winners (the best in the world for each style) and the overall World’s Best in each category.

Note on the awards process – the three stages of judging In each country, category, and style in the first round, normally only one gold, silver and bronze medal are awarded. The gold medal winner then becomes the country winner and moves on to the next round. If there are two gold medal winners, this means their scores were close, however, here as well only the best becomes the country winner. All the titles are score based and winning product has to reach a certain threshold; this is why in some categories you don’t see a country winner or gold, but only a silver or bronze medal. Those do not move forward to the next round. The only exception to the number of medals awarded is if a significant number of products is received in a category, style and country, such as the Lager – Classic Pilsners in Germany. All country winners then compete in round two for the title of World’s Best in their respective style. If successful in the second round, in round three, the World’s Best per style then compete for the title of World’s Best in their respective categories.
